At the dawn of this new millennium, Le Tausagi, the group of environmental
educators, set out on a mission to educate and promote public awareness on
critical environmental issues impacting all residents of Tutuila and
Manu'a with a population of approximately 67,000 people.
Le Tausagi currently has active members from the local Environmental
Protection Agency, Department of Commerce's two programs: Fagatele
Bay National Marine Sanctuary and the American Samoa Coastal Management
Program; Territorial Emergency Management Coordinating Agency (TEMCO), American Samoa Community College's (ASCC) Land Grant
Forestry and Agricultural Extension Programs and National Parks of Amerika
Samoa. Le Tausagi was formed four years ago through a Memorandum of
Understanding signed by the directors of the Department of Marine and
Wildlife Resources (DMWR), Department of Commerce (DOC), American Samoa
Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), and ASCC/Land Grant in an effort
to collaborate all environmental education programs developed by different
environmental government agencies. Other agencies, federal and
territorial, have assisted in Le Tausagi's efforts and these include the
National Parks of Amerika Samoa, Natural Resources Conservation Service,
and the Department of Education (DOE).
We also have active community members who volunteered their time and
effort to promote the message that a clean healthy environment depends on
everyone doing their part, taking responsibility for their actions.
One volunteer is an elementary school teacher while the other is a former
Americorp member. All Americorps volunteers who worked in the above
departments also take an active role in Le Tausagi activities.
