LE TAUSAGI
Brief History

The purpose of forming the Le Tausagi environmental group is to coordinate and implement existing and proposed environmental education (EE) efforts in order to provide a more coherent and powerful EE program to the public.
Le Tasagi's Mission is:  To promote public awareness and education on critical issues impacting our environment and natural resources, with all due respect to cultural and traditional values.

In March 1996, a MOU was signed by all four directors named above and chairperson, Punipuao Lagai-Nagalapadi.  The MOU spelled out the Le Tausagi mission, our purpose for existence, and the advantages of coordinating our programs.  Also one official voting rep from each agency.  Reiterate that Le Tausagi activities will complement and support, normal workloads.  MOU spelled out specific agreements on the use of facilities, vehicles, info and supplies and other support need to carry out mutual goals of Le Tausagi & and the departments.  The MOU was good for one year.

STRATEGIC PLAN
Agency representatives, department managers, DOE representatives designed and developed a five-year strategic plan from 1997-2001.  Included in this plan is main goals within this five-year span.  
1) The Le Tausagi group is to become an independent entity, which will work in collaboration with all environmental agencies
2) Design and develop an environmental education curriculum to be used by the Department of Education and all environmental agencies
3) Increase and promote environmental awareness
4) Identify funding

HIGHLIGHTED ACTIVITIES
1996
  • One-day workshop with 26 school principals.  The theme was:  Empowering through Partnerships.  The main initiative of the workshop was to build partnerships in the school system.  Also, to establish dialogue with the principals in determining how we, as partners, could work together in teaching environmental education in schools.  Environmental curriculum was prioritized by the principals in attendance.
  • Promoted a Village Outreach in the Manu'a Islands.  Five villages and three schools engaged in a discussion forum on environmental issues.  Activities included were Coastal Tree planting and beach cleanups.  An estimate of 1000 participants were reached by the efforts of the program.
  • Two-day Environmental Seminar with 30 teachers.  The Theme was:  Ecological Preservation through Environmental Partnerships.
    Objective:  Solicit partnerships for environment liaisons in the schools.  One day was spent in presentations, and the second day was spent on field trips.
  • Strategic Plan for 1997-2001
  • Celebration of FBNMS 10th Anniversary at Pago Plaza
  • Le Tausagi Presentation of an overview of projects and programs to DOE's Instructional Management Team (includes principals, specialists, curriculum developers, and other formal educators).
  • Implemented a National Parks Education Program at the Visitors Center for grades 6-8.  Program themes included protected areas, endangered species, non-point source pollution, water quality, etc.  Over 1,000 students were served during this program.
  • Catholic Education workshop which included 12 teachers with the objective of empowering the private schools to promote a healthy environment and sustainable natural resources.

1997

  • Promoted the Year of the Coral Reef campaign.  Held a logo and slogan contest and opening ceremony presentations.  Aggressive school and village outreach programs based on coral reef protection and conservation messages.
  • Earth Day Environment celebration held at the malae for school children with presentations and activities.
  • Enviro Discoveries Summer Camp held four sessions.  Themes were much more diversified to include themes from TEMCO, Land Grant, LBJ/EMS.  One-hundred forty kids ages 9-12 were in attendance.
  • Coastweeks Extensive School Outreach with skits and faleaitus.  Faleaitus were introduced as an alternative approach to presentations in the schools.  Five skits were developed and were the main attraction for the school outreach.  Twenty five schools received our skits and plays during the later months of this year.

1998

  • Promoted Village Outreach Program with nine villages.  Held the Year of the Ocean Campaign messages in the form of skits, songs, and activities.
  • School outreach held with sing-along videos and short activities.  By end of the year, we had visited all the public and private schools on island with the exception of the Baptist Schools.  Over 3,000 students were recipients of this Year of the Ocean campaigns.
  • Enviro Discoveries Summer Camps.  Four sessions for 40 students in a session.
  • Le Tausagi Monthly Television Show.  Seven shows were completed by the end of the year.
  • Arbor Week celebrations took Le Tausagi members including their Americorp volunteers out to thirty-one schools for close to 1900 students.
  • Senior Citizens Day.  Le Tausagi, with the assistance with members of a youth group from Leloaloa prepared and presented a special program for the over 500 older citizens of Samoa.  A special tribute was prepared.
  • DOC First Anniversary Celebration.  Booths and displays were set up at three locations during the week-long celebration.
  • DOE Teachers Professional Day.  LE Tausagi group was out full force at the Teachers Professional Day.  Educational resource materials were presented to the teachers after Le Tausagi delivered environmental messages in the form of skits, songs and short plays.

1999

  • First Fishers Exposition.  First ever Fishers Exposition.  First ever Fishers Expo was held for one week with activities for the school children including a traditional fishing activity (enu), presentations, booths and displays as well as a workshop for fisherfolds.

  • Earth Day-Trash-n-Fashion
  • Natural Disaster Awareness Week
  • Arbor Week school visits with tree planting
  • Enviro Summer Camps-three sessions in Tutuila
