MISSION
STATEMENT
The mandate of the American Samoa
Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) is to develop and implement
programs to protect the environment and public health from harmful
impacts on air quality and water quality and to promote proper waste
disposal practices. The US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA)
works in partnership with ASEPA and provides funding and technical
assistance to carry out environmental programs.
Staff members are responsible for implementing various environmental
protection program activities including water quality monitoring,
inspections of facilities and new developments for compliance with
environmental regulations, preparation for response to hazardous
material releases, advocating practices that decrease and prevent
pollution, and educating the public on environmental issues and
practices. ASEPA programs also include the American Conservation
Corps, an AmeriCorps Program, in which youths volunteer for one
year of service to improve the environment in exchange for a monthly
living allowance and an education award.
