MISSION STATEMENT
To enhance the quality of life for present and future generations by
directing sound economic development, community planning and resource
management to ensure preservation and enrichment of natural and cultural
resources.
To accomplish this mission the
Department of Commerce plans and carries out activities that:

Facilitate economic growth
and development
-
Foster sound land use
planning and management; and
-
Protect and enrich the
natural environment and cultural resources
Four major divisions in the
Department with the support of a fifth administrative division carry out
these activities. The four major divisions are the Planning
Division, the Economic Development Division, the Research and Statistical
Division and the Resource Management Division. The fifth division,
is the Administrative Division, which provides support through personnel, fiscal
and information management.
Also included in the Department of Commerce (DOC) is the Office of
Tourism. The Office of Tourism has supported the DOC in developing
economic growth in the following ways:

Hosted several writers,
photographers and film crews who visited American Samoa on assignments
for Polynesia Magazine, the National Geographic Magazine and a German
TV film crew.

Partnered with other
agencies in promoting the Miss America Samoa Pageant and with the Drug
Free Program to develop the Moso'oi/Drug Free Festival. Also
partnered with Land Grant Forestry Project in the development of their
5 year plan and with the American Samoa Environmental Protection
Agency Paradise (ASEPA) 2000 Program.

Used the Internet to
market tourism in American Samoa.

Greeted and assisted
20,000 cruise ship passengers who visited our shores.

Assisted in the
development of the annual Christmas program and the Starkist/Tourism
Santa Claus Motorcade.
