MISSION
STATEMENT
The Department of Marine and Wildlife Resources (DMWR) functions for the
protection and management or the Territory's marine and wildlife
resources to the extent intended to best benefit the people of American
Samoa while ensuring the integrity of such resources for
posterity. The various projects undertaken by the department are
designed to:
- Generate information for the
formulation of policies and guidelines for conservation and
management of the resources;
- Provide direct services and technical
assistance for the development of community and government programs
compatible with the wise utilization of natural resources; and
- Prevent or minimize abusive or
exploitative use of resources through conservation education and
implementation of applicable federal and local regulations.
The majority of DMWR's projects are
federally funded through:
- Federal Aid in Wildlife and Sport Fish
Restoration grants and
- Monies from the National Marine
Fisheries Service (NMFS) Western Pacific Fish Information Network (WPacFIN)
Additional support for other projects
comes from local funds through contracted services. |
